Working Papers

“Co-creation in the NICU: Reducing the ‘Stressed Customer’
Parent Experience by Aligning Servicescape Role with Expected Identity” with John W. Schouten. We look to an assemblage theoretical lens to frame the discussion around the merging of assemblies in a neonatal intensive care unit. We use this conceptualization to propose a theory on servicescape co-creation in a high stakes/high pressure technological environment. Targeted for submission to Journal of Marketing

“An Assemblage Theory Perspective on Aging in Place in a Contested Neighborhood” Ethnographic study reveals a construct called consumption lifelines, which explains how consumers and communities use market-facing resources to find and create relative stability in the midst of turbulence. Targeted for submission to Journal of Consumer Research

“Millenials, Student Debt, and Alumni Affinity” with Hal Koenig and James McAlexander. A study of 1,200 alumni to a large university reveals that amount of debt is insignificant as per alumni affinity, but debt making life choices difficult is strongly significantly negatively correlated to alumni affinity. This effect is consistent across cohorts. Targeted submission to Journal for Marketing of Higher Education

CURRENT PROJECTS

“Medical Consumers and Consumer-Centric Care Transitions,” with Gregory Carpenter, Northwestern, Ashlee Humphries Northwestern, and Lez Trujillo, University of Illinois at Chicago. Large scale project in three phases. Five multi-billion dollar health care systems across the US are analyzed, exploring their transition to a consumer-centric model. Phase 1: Ethnographic observation and depth interviews to reveal process model for the transition to a consumer-centric focus in health care. Data Collection: Complete—2017-2018 site visits, immersion, depth interviews. Analysis and writing in progress. Presentations: May 20-23 to industry executives, October 2018 to ACR. Targeted Submission: Journal of Marketing

“Social Enterprise and Identity of Place: Re-connecting Newfoundlanders with Their Fishing Heritage through Social Enterprise,” with John W. Schouten and Natalie Slawinski. Grant submitted 2017. Our project team will address gaps in theoretical and practical knowledge through an ethnographic study of the social enterprise, “Girls Who Fish”, in Petty Harbor, Newfoundland.

“Memes and the Social Media Echo Chamber: Implications for Public Policy,” with Ioannis Kareklas. Project will correlate demographics, political leanings, and potential “echo chamber” effects to political issue memes and meme comments. This project has the potential to guide policy makers as to how best to communicate on social media in our post truth era of fake news and consumer skepticism.

ACADEMIC COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY

2016-Present: Collaboration with Health Care Academy and HCA Consumer Consortium with colleagues at Northwestern University on a three year project to analyze the transition to consumer-centric focus in large health care systems nationwide. Engagement includes interviewing C-suite executives of the major health systems, managers, front line workers, and patients, ethnographic observation, analysis, development of scales and survey instruments, and field experiments to assess systems’ progress on moving to a patient-centered model, and practices that move this process forward effectively.

2014-present: Collaboration with international interdisciplinary medical team to add ethnographic analysis, servicescape analysis, consumer culture analysis, and social marketing techniques to their “Separation and Closeness in the Neonatal Environment” initiative. Written in as work group for a Horizon 20/20 grant for study of NICUs to improve family bonding.
